Cette phrase de Chagall réelle ou apocryphe aurait pu être celle d’Aimé Maeght. L’aimé des dieux, ce fut bien cet orphelin qui perdit son père en 1914 et qui vécut une renaissance dans les Cévennes en suivant sa famille déplacée loin des premiers combats.

La rencontre avec Bonnard à Cannes où Aimé Maeght a installé sa famille est de cet ordre, de l’ordre de l’adoubement. Bonnard qui a confié un petit travail de réalisation d’affiche s’émerveille de la capacité du jeune homme à « traduire la couleur de la chair ».
L’histoire est lancée, l’impétrant a rencontré le maître et une saga de quarante années jusqu’au décès d’Aimé Maeght (1906-1981) va se développer associant l’extraordinaire réussite d’une galerie et celle d’un éditeur d’art qui ajoutera au panthéon de l’édition des ouvrages de bibliophilie remarquables et un nombre impressionnant d’estampes signées des plus grands noms de la modernité. C’est cet ensemble qui est aujourd’hui l’objet de l’exposition de la 10e Triennale Mondiale de l’Estampe de Chamalières. These pronounced words of Chagall a short time before his death could have been those of Aimé Maeght. The loved one of the Gods could have been this orphan who lost his father in 1914 and who lived a new lifefollowing the evacuation of his family to the Cévennes.

The meeting with Bonnard in Cannes where Aimé Maeght had installed his family was of this order, the order of confidence. Bonnard who had given Maeght a small task of producing a poster marvelled at the capacity of the young man to “reproduce the colour of flesh”.
The story was under way, the applicant had met the master and a saga of 40 years until the death of Aimé Maeght (1906 – 1981) would develop itself associating the extraordinary success of a gallery with that of an editor of art who would add to the pantheon of publication of remarkable books and an impressive number of engravings signed by the greatest artists of modern times. It is this unity which is today fundamental to the Chamalières exhibition, the 10th World Triennial of Engraving.
